The Paul Ramsay Foundation will support the Australian Red Cross to provide urgent assistance to victims of the devastating NSW and Queensland floods with $3 million in emergency funding.
With tens of thousands of people evacuated, the floods have devastated communities, some already dealing with the triple disadvantage of drought, fire and now flood.
Foundation CEO Professor Glyn Davis AC said it was vital that those who could step up to help Australians at times of crisis do so.
“Natural disasters take a terrifying physical, financial and mental toll on those affected. Australians reeling from damage need to know they are not alone,” he said.
“The Australian Red Cross is doing critical work on the ground to assist people affected by these floods, and we are proud to support that effort with this emergency funding.
"The Paul Ramsay Foundation works to help break the cycle of disadvantage in Australia. Natural disasters can set off a devastating spiral of events, affecting the financial and mental health of victims.
“The greatest toll is often felt by vulnerable people and communities experiencing entrenched disadvantage.
“It is essential to support those who are on the ground with immediate relief, but we also know recovery is a long and difficult process which must not further entrench disadvantage.”
Red Cross personnel are providing comfort, support and psychosocial first aid to people affected by the disaster in ten evacuation centres across NSW.
Red Cross volunteers are also helping to distribute clothing and blankets to people in need and are providing the public with information and assisting with inquiries at the Public Information and Inquiry Centre (PIIC) in Sydney.
“Our thoughts are with the individuals, families, communities, emergency workers, and service providers who are so profoundly affected by this disaster.”
